Congressman Russ Fulcher Visits Intermax Networks
High-quality internet is a constant challenge for residents and businesses of rural communities. As a local Internet Service Provider, Intermax builds and operates a world-class telecommunications network that helps families live where they choose and still work remotely, succeed in online education, and access medical care. That network is based on two fundamental technologies: fiber-optic and fixed wireless.
Fiber tech sends signals down a fast, reliable wire, and handles enormous subscriber growth. It requires a connection to every subscriber – a reasonable approach in high-density urban locations but one that leaves rural areas out of the loop. Fixed wireless tech sends signals out over the air from a mountaintop radio, an excellent approach to scattered locations within sight of the radio towers, but sometimes challenged by interference from trees or weather.
The Intermax network now covers large parts of Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington. Customers can access fiber today in Clarkston and Lincoln County, WA, with new projects underway in Idaho’s Hauser Lake and from Farragut State Park to Spirit Lake. The fixed wireless network serves communities like Sandpoint and St. Maries, where recent upgrades are bringing 1Gbps fiber speeds to select areas.
Experience serving customers with both fiber and fixed wireless tech uniquely qualifies Intermax to advise communications policymakers prioritizing internet access for rural customers. Last week Congressman Russ Fulcher (R-ID) joined Intermax CTO Pat Whalen, ISP Sales Director Jamè Davis, and radio vendor Tarana Wireless on a field trip to the top of Lone Mountain. Intermax radios located here directly serve almost 1000 customers in the area from Rathdrum to Spirit Lake to Athol while providing backup and relay services for customers in locations like Post Falls, Bayview, Coeur d’Alene, and Schweitzer. The group saw firsthand the complexities of delivering high-quality internet to large areas of sparsely populated country, and Intermax also offered insights from the new projects connecting 10K new households along Highway 54.
The trip effectively brought Washington, DC, into the Idaho countryside, prompting the congressman to comment, “Reliable and cost-effective, broadband access for Americans in rural communities is essential in today’s 21st-century economy. It was a pleasure to join the Intermax Networks and Tarana Wireless teams for a tour of the Lone Mountain site and to see firsthand how this technology is being used to serve thousands of Idahoan homes and businesses with fast internet!”
