Frequently Asked Questions

Fiber Internet

Fiber internet is a high-speed internet technology that uses fiber-optic cables to transmit data as light signals rather than relying on electrical signals through copper or coaxial cables. This enables incredibly fast and reliable data transfer, making it one of the best internet options available today.

Fiber internet uses thin strands of glass or plastic (fiber-optic cables) to transmit data. These cables carry information at nearly the speed of light, allowing for faster and more efficient internet connections compared to traditional methods.

Once fiber is run to your house, installation includes our Home Equipment (router and mobile app) and an on-location setup appointment.

Intermax has 3 different speed options 400Mbps, 600Mbps and 1Gig. These speeds will allow you to do anything you need with your internet. Anything more than 1Gb is pure marketing.

No, Intermax does not have data caps on our internet plans.

Our fiber service area is rapidly expanding! Call our sales team at 208-676-0471 or complete the contact form to learn more.

If you’ve relocated from a large city or a different state, you may have had access to fiber for a lower monthly cost. Intermax fiber serves a relatively small number of customers, but the cable is still connected right to your house. Providing this service in the country costs more than providing it in an urban location where a fiber cable can serve hundreds of customers in a single city block.

Replacing satellite internet with Intermax fiber means no contracts, data caps, buffering, or surprise fees. The performance is constant, steady, and solid for both uploads and downloads, so you can sync those high-res vacation photos and videos without prompting shouts from another room. In addition, you can choose your favorite streaming content provider(s) and pay only for content you want instead of fixed packages with channels you never watch.

Nationwide cable Internet providers rely on older generation copper wires designed to carry simple television signals to millions of customer homes. Television providers often bundle content in limited packages with automatic price increases. Intermax fiber offers unlimited content options, fixed pricing, and astonishing speeds. More importantly, customers say they love the way a modern, local provider treats them like friends and neighbors.

We’ll help! Our installers don’t leave until you are satisfied. We get you set up with new ways to use your new Intermax fiber to watch TV, movies, and sports over the Internet on all the devices in your house, so you can get what you want when you want. Really.

That’s great! Existing accounts with providers like HBO Max, Peacock, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Fubo, ESPN, or Disney+ will work even better over a fiber connection. And you can always add or subtract content providers with no Internet service fees or price changes. Bring on the watch parties!

Traditional DSL, cable, and satellite all average less than 100 megabits per second (Mbps). Fiber connections move data at 1 gigabit (1000Mbps) both to and from your devices, which means fiber is at least 10 times faster both up AND down. And it’s unlimited so you can use as much as you want. In fact, we dare you…

Anything you do with a cable (Spectrum, TDS), or satellite provider (Dish, DirectTV, Starlink) – but as much as 10x faster, for all household devices, and for both upload and download. Video conference as if you were in the office or make smooth, satisfying family video chats. Stream sporting events from any league in the world using the streaming service of your choice. Drop gaming latency and ping times below 10 milliseconds. Work remotely or connect to the classroom without missing a download or a save.

We do! We’re headquartered in Coeur d’Alene and customers rave about our local support teams. You may have seen our fiber installation teams busy working in your neighborhood. When you call you reach people that live and work in these communities, and our service techs can come to your house to support you in person.

Generally, it works like this: our team brings the fiber optic cable from the street to a small box on your home’s exterior. Typically, the cable is dug underground but occasionally comes through the air from a pole. We add power and convert the fiber cable to an Ethernet connection in a box inside of your home, then connect our router or you may use your own. Obviously, some sites are more challenging, but we’ll do our best to meet your needs. It’s important to note that if you live on a private road, we may need permission from all parties before we can complete the installation.

Customers who are not within reach of a fiber cable love their Intermax fixed wireless connections. This technology sends microwave radio signals from nearby mountaintop radio towers down to an antenna on or near your house. If the mountain is in sight, you can see speeds up to 100MBps that are still much faster than DSL, Cable, or Satellite. Call us to inquire about a site survey.

Yes, you are welcome to change your bandwidth at any time to meet your household’s needs. Just call our sales team and they will be happy to assist you.

No. We believe in earning your business every month, so we don’t have contracts. You can cancel at any time; we only ask that you give us a 30-day notice as a courtesy.

YES. Gaming subscriptions and content like Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Plus, and Amazon Luna all run beautifully over fiber. In fact, a device might be able to run on fiber out to the internet faster than to another device inside your own home network!

Yes. We won’t leave the installation until you are connected and running strong. We recommend adding an Intermax router to your subscription to include security and network management tools that let us help keep you and your family up and running safely. Fixed Wireless Internet

Intermax fixed wireless technology sends wireless signals from nearby mountaintop radio towers down to an antenna on or near your house. Fixed wireless uses different spectrums of microwaves in focused beams to create an internet link. Microwave is just a lower spectrum of light we cannot see, and in fact all internet technology connections from DSL, Cable, Satellite, and Fiber are using different spectrums of light outside the visible spectrum, at different amplitudes to provide media conversion from its protocol, back to internet. DSL, Cable, and Fiber run over or inside of a cable made of copper or glass. Fixed wireless is through the air, which means versatility, and also, it’s easier to repair and provide redundancy via back up links we program into your receiver.

Our speeds vary by geographic location and terrain. However, Intermax download speeds range from a minimum of 25Mbps to more than 800Mbps. Our technology is top-of-the-line and state-of-the-art, giving our customers extremely low latency and the best technology experience possible.

We’re constantly upgrading the network, so please call us for the most up-to-date options in your location. No matter where you are, there is NEVER a bandwidth cap or congestion charge, and it’s unlimited, so you can use as much as you want. In fact, we dare you…

With a fixed wireless connection, our customers can stream TV and movies, game online, and work from home, seamlessly without buffering. The internet experience using our service in rural areas is the best available, beating most of our competitors.

Generally, it works like this: The technician will call you before arriving. When they show up, they will test to confirm service standards and stability, then plan with you where the receiver needs to go on your house and where to bring cable inside based on receiver positioningThe cable from the receiver will enter an outer wall next to a power outlet.  The tech will then begin installation, which takes 1-2 hours, depending on the scope of work involved. After installation, the technician will help you set up your WiFi and assist with any questions you might have.

Home Equipment

Your home network requires a router (also called gateway) device for it to connect to the rest of the Internet. The standard Intermax Home Equipment package includes Calix WiFi 6 router and the Intermax Insights mobile application to give you the latest in connectivity and control.

We strongly recommend this to customers because this package also supports additional software suite upgrades with functionality like in-depth parental traffic monitoring and controls, protection against malicious websites, and network virus detection.

All Intermax routers include parental controls, network protection, and the ability to mesh multiple devices over a WiFi 6 backhaul. In addition, the Intermax Insights mobile app gives you behavior health reports and lets you manage your router’s settings, even away from home.

Our team will setup the router and teach you the mobile app during installation. If you upgrade or replace your router, you should be able to just plug it in and turn it on. If you need any help, contact our support team.

Troubleshooting Support

Diagnosing basic internet connection issues can involve a few simple steps to identify and potentially resolve the problem. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Check Hardware Connections:
    • Ensure that all cables (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) are securely connected to your modem/router and your device (computer, smartphone, etc.).
    • If using Wi-Fi, make sure your device is within the range of the router.
  2. Restart Devices:
    • Restart both your modem and router by unplugging them from power for about 10-15 seconds and then plugging them back in.
    • Restart the device you’re trying to connect to the internet (computer, smartphone, etc.).
  3. Check Modem and Router Lights:
    • Most modems and routers have indicator lights that show the status of the connection. Check if the appropriate lights are on, indicating a stable connection.
  4. Test Multiple Devices:
    • If possible, test the internet connection on multiple devices to determine if the issue is specific to one device or affecting all devices.
  5. Check for Service Outages:
    • Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or visit their website to check if there are any reported outages in your area.
  6. Run Network Troubleshoot:
    • On Windows, you can right-click the network icon in the system tray and select “Troubleshoot problems.”
    • On macOS, go to “System Preferences” > “Network” > select your network connection and click “Assist me…” > “Diagnosis.”
  7. Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength:
    • If using Wi-Fi, check the signal strength on your device. Weak signals can result in slow or intermittent connectivity. Try moving closer to the router.
  8. Reset Router Settings:
    • If you’re familiar with router settings, you can try resetting your router to its default settings. Be cautious, as this will erase any custom settings.
  9. Disable VPN or Proxy:
    • If you’re using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or a proxy, try disabling them to see if they’re causing the connectivity issue.
  10. Update Firmware:
    • Check if your router’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes outdated firmware can cause connectivity problems.
  11. Firewall and Security Software:
    • Temporarily disable any firewall or security software to see if they’re causing the issue.
  12. Contact ISP:
    • If none of the above steps work, contact your ISP’s customer support. They can guide you through more advanced troubleshooting and potentially schedule a technician if needed.

Remember that specific solutions can vary based on your setup and the nature of the problem. If you’re unsure about any step, it’s always a good idea to reach out to technical support for assistance.

A Power over Ethernet (PoE) Injector is a device that enables the delivery of both electrical power and data over a single Ethernet cable to network devices. It’s a common solution used in networking to power devices like IP cameras, wireless access points, VoIP phones, and other networked equipment in situations where it may be inconvenient or impractical to have a separate power source for each device.

Here’s what a typical PoE injector looks like and how it works:

Appearance: A PoE injector is a small, typically rectangular or box-shaped device with Ethernet ports and a power input. Its appearance may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer, but it generally includes:

  1. Ethernet Ports: PoE injectors usually have at least two Ethernet ports – one labeled “Data In” or “LAN” and another labeled “Data + Power Out” or “PoE Out.” The “Data In” port is where you connect your network switch or router, and the “Data + Power Out” port is where you connect the device you want to power.
  2. Power Input: There’s usually a power input port that accepts an AC or DC power source, which provides the electrical power to be sent over the Ethernet cable.

How It Works: The PoE injector works by taking power from a standard electrical outlet and combining it with the data signal from your network switch or router. Here’s a simplified overview of how it operates:

  1. You plug the PoE injector into a power outlet and connect it to your network switch or router using a standard Ethernet cable. This provides the data signal.
  2. You then connect the device (e.g., an IP camera or wireless access point) that you want to power using another Ethernet cable. This cable runs from the “Data + Power Out” port of the injector to the device.
  3. The PoE injector combines the electrical power with the data signal and sends both over the Ethernet cable to the connected device.
  4. The powered device receives both data and power through a single cable and operates accordingly.

PoE injectors are a convenient way to power network devices in locations where it’s challenging to run separate power lines. It’s important to ensure compatibility between the PoE injector and the device you want to power, as there are different PoE standards (e.g., IEEE 802.3af, IEEE 802.3at) that provide varying levels of power delivery. Additionally, PoE injectors should be used within their power budget to avoid overloading them.
