How to Troubleshoot Common Internet Connection Issues at Home

There’s nothing more frustrating than sitting down to stream a movie, join a video meeting, or scroll social media only to discover your internet isn’t cooperating.

The good news? Many internet problems can be solved in just a few minutes without calling support.

Whether your WiFi is slow, keeps disconnecting, or isn’t working at all, these simple troubleshooting steps can help you get back online quickly.

1. Restart Your Equipment

It may sound cliché, but restarting your modem and router solves more internet issues than you might think.

To reboot your equipment:

  1. Unplug your router (and modem if you have one).
  2. Wait about 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the modem back in first and wait for it to fully reconnect.
  4. Plug your router back in and allow it to finish starting up.

This clears temporary issues and refreshes your connection.

2. Check Your Cables

Loose or damaged cables can interrupt your internet connection.

Take a quick look to make sure:

  • Power cables are securely plugged in.
  • Ethernet cables click firmly into place.
  • There are no damaged or frayed cords.
  • Your modem and router have normal indicator lights.

If something looks damaged, replacing a cable may solve the problem.

3. Test Your WiFi Signal

Sometimes the internet is working perfectly, but your WiFi signal isn’t reaching the device you’re using.

A few ways to improve coverage:

  • Place your router in a central location.
  • Keep it off the floor and out in the open.
  • Avoid placing it behind TVs, inside cabinets, or near large metal objects.
  • Keep it away from microwaves and other electronics that can cause interference.

If your home has multiple floors or large rooms, you may benefit from additional WiFi coverage.

4. Check If One Device or Everything Is Affected

Determine whether the problem is with your network or a single device.

Ask yourself:

  • Does every device have the issue?
  • Or is it only one phone, laptop, or smart TV?

If only one device is affected, try:

  • Turning WiFi off and back on.
  • Restarting the device.
  • Forgetting your WiFi network and reconnecting.

5. Run an Internet Speed Test

If your internet feels slower than normal, running a speed test can help identify the issue.

Keep in mind that speeds may vary depending on:

  • How many devices are connected
  • Whether someone is streaming or gaming
  • Distance from the router
  • WiFi signal strength

Testing from multiple devices can help determine whether the issue is with your network or a specific device.

6. Check for Service Outages

Sometimes the issue isn’t inside your home.

If you’ve completed the basic troubleshooting steps and still don’t have internet, there may be a service interruption in your area.

Intermax customers can check for service updates or contact our local support team for assistance.

7. Make Sure Your Router Is Up to Date

Like computers and smartphones, routers receive firmware updates that improve performance, reliability, and security.

Most modern routers update automatically, but older equipment may require manual updates.

If you’re unsure whether your equipment is current, our support team can help.

8. Secure Your WiFi Network

A weak WiFi password doesn’t just create a security risk—it can also slow your connection if unauthorized users gain access.

Choose a strong password that:

  • Uses a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Isn’t easily guessed
  • Is unique to your home network

Changing your password periodically is also a good security habit.

9. Clear Your Browser Cache

If only certain websites are loading slowly or displaying errors, the issue may not be your internet at all.

Try:

  • Clearing your browser cache and cookies
  • Opening the site in another browser
  • Restarting your browser

This can often resolve website-specific issues.
